"...sharp in its grooviness and splashes of
harmonica and brass – while retaining real
intimacy." - Classic Rock
Multi-instrumentalist David Ford returns with his most ambitious solo album to date. Animal Spirits is out on 11th May 2018 via AntiFragile Music.
The album is a collection of songs about economics, Ford explains “I became distressed at my ignorance on such a significant subject and so I began reading up on it. I soon became perplexed at how a scientific field populated by some of the most brilliant minds might arrive at such a disunited set of very well-reasoned opinions”. Animal Spirits turns these themes into songs, tackling complex subjects in a way that is accessible, emotive and entertaining.
Opening single Downmarket, offers a powerful introduction to this rich collection of songs. Filled with blues-infused guitar riffs, majestic choral harmonies and Ford’s distinctive lead vocal, it creates a sound akin to that of early Rod Stewart and Benjamin Booker’s work. Ballads like ‘By Your Side’ and ‘We Always Knew’ combine Ford’s aching lyrics and a beautifully intricate musicality to create something that mirrors that of John Lennon’s heart-wrenching songwriting talents. Forthcoming single Why Don’t You Answer Your Telephone? re-introduces those big bluesy riffs, building up to a truly anthemic sound alongside soaring harmonies and a killer guitar solo.
Having never been an artist to follow tradition, Ford has remained defiantly under the mainstream radar. Over the course of his decade long career, he continues to astound a dedicated fanbase and has supported the likes of Elvis Costello, Ray Lamontague and Aqualung to name but a few. With five critically acclaimed solo albums already under his belt, Animal Spirits is Ford’s first to be recorded in the US and was produced by James Brown (Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, Interpol). Ford has received praised from the likes of The Guardian, The Times and The Sunday Times as well as winning France’s Victoires de la Musique award for ‘Original Song of The Year’ in 2014.
With Animal Spirits, David Ford hopes to take listeners on a perpetual journey of discovery, refinement and reinvention, fused with poetic lyricism, intricate melodies and unapologetic blues rock.
