Hannah Epperson

"...captivating minimalist pop..."

- The Line of Best Fit

Canadian artist Hannah Epperson prepares to captivate listeners with the release of her eagerly awaited album Slowdown, out now via Listen Collective. This is the second half of a two-piece project with first half, album Upsweep, being released in October 2016.

On Slowdown, there are two distinct versions of each piece – one extremely reduced and minimalist (Iris), the other a crystal clear pop interpretation (Amelia). Each tracks has the incredible ability to completely submerge the listener, surrounding them with haunting, visceral soundscapes and Epperson’s evocative lyrics and whimsical vocals. Armed with her violin and loop pedal, Epperson combines dream folk, synth-pop, classical and jazz influences to create something both elegant and brave, sitting somewhere between the inventive sounds of Julia Holter and Sylvan Esso.

In Epperson’s universe, the names Iris and Amelia represent two fictional characters whose opposing worlds come together to form the likewise fictional character of a narcissistic and alienated young man with a severe and (potentially) life-threatening obsession. Iris and Amelia stand in clear contrast with each other. The lyrics transport that oscillation between the two characters and merge the real and the surreal, the finite and the infinite. These rich conceptual dimensions throughout the album show further evidence of Epperson’s incredible songwriting and story telling abilities.

Epperson grew up in Vancouver where she is also a successful ultimate frisbee player for Canada’s national team. She has a profound political and social consciousness, regularly exposing gender inequalities and destroying prevalent notions of feminity. Epperson has already received praise from the likes of Bandcamp Daily and Indie Shuffle to name but a few. With Slowdown, Hannah Epperson hopes to immerse listeners further with genre-defying, passionate musicianship.

Hannah Epperson will be on tour in Europe over the next few months. A full list of tour dates can be found via Hannah's website.
