HAWK reveal new single ‘Can’t Explain’!
“… Julie Hawk separates riffs from
raff with punch and poised intensity."
- Disorder Magazine
“…waves of heavy percussion and
intertwining riffs." - DIY
"...a raucous dip into empowerment..." - The Line Of Best Fit
“…stunning…” - Noisey
Following their previous majestic release, Sin, Berlin-based HAWK return with the sweeping passion of new AA-side Can’t Explain / Below, out now via Veta Records. Both singles are available to stream on Spotify and buy on iTunes now.
Can't Explain premiered on Disorder Magazine and is also available to stream on Soundcloud and Spotify now.
Can’t Explain is another example of HAWK’s acute social awareness and ability to create powerful soundscapes with a unique, compelling elegance. It was written as a reaction to people’s ignorance and the power privilege has to erase the voices of those who need to be heard. A gritty slice of grunge-filled indie, its propelled by thrashing riffs and a seething passion. Can’t Explain showcases the soaring power of Julie’s vocal at its most intense, as a potent sense of urgency rages throughout.
Below is also available to stream on Spotify and Soundcloud now.
Inspired by Irish history, the Catholic church and its mistreatment of women, Below oozes a twinkling, ethereal splendour as the spine-tingling emotion of Julie Hawk’s celestial vocals flow. With a rich, haunting grandeur, a shimmering delicacy is juxtaposed with a searing passion and dark undertones, conveying the track’s message with a captivating grace. Julie explains “as an Irish woman, both looking back at how women were treated in the past and the desperate lack of progress today, I feel betrayed by my country. We’re still fighting for basic reproductive rights for women and seeing an embarrassing response from our government.”
HAWK originally formed in London in 2014. They now produce all music themselves and have also recently started working with Rocky O’Reilly (And So I Watch You From Afar) to help develop their post-rock sound. In addition to their musical endeavours, front woman Julie is also a skilled illustrator and has recently launched Female Fronted Drawn Together - a project through which she has created a playlist of admirable female bands/musicians and created an illustration to accompany each song.
Since the release of critically acclaimed singles such as Take It Away, Mirror Maze, Once Told and most recently, Sin, HAWK have received support from Noisey, Stereogum, Wonderland, DIY and The Line Of Best Fit to name but a few. Combining an abrasive edge with a beguiling grace, activism is at the heart of all HAWK create, with their music covering a range of topics including inequality, gender-preconceptions, and generalisations faced by different social groups.

HAWK release new single ‘Sin’!
“…waves of heavy percussion and

"... a raucous dip into empowerment..." - The Line Of Best Fit
“…stunning…” - Noisey
HAWK are back with another truly majestic release, combining an abrasive edge with celestial vocals and activism at its core. Their new single Sin is out now via Veta Records and is available to buy on iTunes and stream on
Spotify.
The audio for the single premiered exclusively on The Line Of Best Fit and is available to stream on Soundcloud now.
Sin addresses the need to embrace female sexuality and autonomy, instead of demonising it or ignoring it full stop. The track is propelled forwards by front woman Julie Hawk’s poignant, crystal-clear vocals and twinkling hooks, oozing a sweeping grandeur throughout. Filled with an empowering grace, Sin asserts that we should be proud of being sexual and recognise the power of consent. It’s about stepping out of an age old framework that women should be ashamed of promiscuity or expressing self-love. Julie explains “it’s shouting about embracing our feelings, our cravings, our pasts, and even our mistakes, as we define them. We wear them on our skin and let them empower us as women”.
HAWK originally formed in London in 2014 to hone their unique style of grunge-filled indie. They now produce all music themselves and have also recently started working with Rocky O’Reilly (And So I Watch You From Afar) to help develop their post-rock sound.

To celebrate the release of their latest EP She Knows, Hawk have shared their transcendent new single Ghosts, out now via Veta Records. Both Ghosts and She Knows are available to stream on Spotify and buy on iTunes now.
The single premiered on DIY and is also available to stream on Hawk's Soundcloud page now.
You can also watch the video for Hawk's previous single Take It Away, which premiered on Nialler9, now on the band's YouTube channel.
She Knows, which is currently at #21 in the iTunes Ireland Alternative Chart, covers a range of themes including inequality, exclusion and preconceptions and generalisations faced by different social groups every day. Hawk’s acute social awareness is a trait that the band hold dear but instead of unravelling these ideas into brash political punk songs, they convey their message with beauty and grace. Hawk are not a ‘political band’ but instead a group of friends using their creative talents to mirror the inequalities they witness in everyday life.
Take It Away was written as a reaction to singer Julie Hawk’s friend being followed home after a night out. Her friend was told that she “shouldn’t have been out on her own at that time” but Julie says that comments like that “miss the point and are the main cause of the problem” in that it’s not the fault of the person being followed but the man who takes away her freedom to walk back home on her own. Mirror Maze is about what society expects from us from a female perspective, which is touched upon again on a global sense in Ghosts - we should break free from society’s standards and be comfortable in our own skin. Meanwhile, ‘Static’ shines a light on those in power who pay lip service but fail to insight real change.
Amongst the band’s supporters are Noisey, Stereogum, Clash, The Line of Best Fit and Wonderland Magazine, who have all commented on Hawk’s edgy emotionality. Now, with She Knows, the band are ready to defy expectations once again, soaring to new heights on this latest release.

Showcasing a darker, grungier and ultimately bigger sound, Once Told is the first track to be taken from the band’s upcoming self-titled EP, which will be released on 15th April 2016. The band collaborated with producer Dimitri Tikovoi (Horrors, Placebo, Marianne Faithful) on Once Told with the track mixed by Catherine Marks best known for her previous work with Wolf Alice and Howling Bells.
Since the release of their last EP Clock Hands in 2015, the band can already count the likes of The Line of Best Fit, Noisey, Clash, Music Week, The Irish Times, Radio X’s John Kennedy, Amazing Radio and BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson and Chris Hawkins as keen supporters.
Once Told will be released via Veta Records on February 19th 2016 with self-titled EP HAWK out on April 15th 2016.

A Badge of Friendship to co-curate the main stage at Brew At The Bog Festival!
A Badge of Friendship are very pleased to announce that we'll be co-curating the main stage at Brew at the Bog Festival on Friday June 3rd 2016 alongside Podcart and Netsounds.
The festival runs over two days - Friday June 3rd and Saturday June 4th 2016 - and we have handpicked two bands from our roster we felt would make great additions to the festival line-up, our very own HAWK and Ex Libras.
HAWK announced their latest single Once Told, out February 19th 2016. Check it out on Soundcloud.
Ex Libras recently released their latest EP Woe. You can download the free track 'Drive' now via Soundcloud.
The initial line-up announced also happens to include bands already on the ABoF roster - clearly the good folks at Brew have very good taste indeed! Dead Boy Robotics, The Van T's, Best Girl Athlete and Outblinker will also appear at the festival over the two days. However, also announced is Mercury Prize 2015 nominee C Duncan, the brilliant HQFU, Pinact, JR Green with many more yet to be announced.
A two-day camping festival, Brew at the Bog showcases the very best home-grown Scottish musical talent, as well as the country’s best craft drinks and food. It’s held at Bogbain Farm in Inverness, which was crowned "Best Unusual Venue" at the 2012 Scottish Event Awards - the perfect setting for a festival that prides itself on championing the best of Scotland’s alternative scene.
As well as the music, there will be a dedicated craft beer bar offering the best selections from across Scotland.
Add to that a wide choice of Scotland’s finest gins, cider from award-winning Thistly Cross and a fizzy treat in the form of a prosecco bar, the drinks line-up matches the music bill in terms of quality and choice.
Tickets are currently £59 and available HERE.

HAWK set to release single ‘Once Told’
“…simply sublime…” - The Line of Best Fit
HAWK return with their fantastic new release Once Told due for release on Febuary 19th 2016 via Veta Records.
Like their previous release Glass, which focused on the recent Marriage Equality Referendum that took place in Ireland, Once Told is a track that has activism at its heart. Focusing on Ireland's abortion laws and wider issues around pregnancy, sexuality and contraception the band are trying to help expose the country's "archaic mindsets and processes which systemically lets down women, especially those in more vulnerable circumstances”.
Once Told premiered on The Line of Best Fit but you can listen to it now via the band's Soundcloud page.
Showcasing a darker, grungier and ultimately bigger sound Once Told is the first track to be taken from the band’s upcoming self-titled EP which will be released in April 2016. Having taken a diverse approach to songwriting and developing their sound, the band note, "we've hit a point that we really feel like we've found our identity and these tracks represent HAWK”. The band collaborated with producer Dimitri Tikovoi (Horrors, Placebo, Marianne Faithful) on Once Told with the track mixed by Catherine Marks best known for her previous work with Wolf Alice and Howling Bells.
HAWK's previous EP Clock Hands gained support from the likes of The Line Of Best Fit, Music Week (who tipped them as ones to watch in 2015), as well as Amazing Radio, BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, and XFM DJ and Blur drummer Dave Rowntree.
HAWK have been described as everything from noir-rock to alternative-folk. Irish-born lead singer Julie Hawk (vocals and guitar) initially embarked on a solo folk career, and began collaborating with Matthew Harris (guitar) in 2012. After a year on the acoustic circuit, the fledgling duo joined Sam Campbell (drums) and Chris Handsley (bass) to form the band you hear now, adding a new abrasive edge to their sound while retaining the delicacy of their acoustic roots.
Once Told will be released via Veta Records on February 19th 2015.
HAWK release ‘Glass’ to support Ireland’s Marriage Equality Referendum!
"HAWK combine post-punk and folk in a spine-tingling brew that'll take potshots at your emotional wellbeing" - The Line of Best Fit
"...a searing post-rock epic..." - Gigwise
HAWK return with Glass, a brand new track inspired by the upcoming Marriage Equality Referendum taking place in Ireland on 22nd May 2015. A YES vote will legalise marriage in Ireland between same sex couples, and bring marriage equality for all the country's citizens - it will also be the first time a country has legalised marriage equality by popular vote. The band want to encourage people to vote for this incredibly important issue and are releasing this track and the accompanying kaleidoscopic video to raise awareness as well as to show their solidarity.
'Glass' has already picked up support from the likes of The Line Of Best Fit, Gigwise and Artrocker and you can download and stream the song for free via the band's SoundCloud page.
You can also watch the gorgeous and kaleidoscopic video that accompanies the track on the band's YouTube channel.
The track has an ethereal quality that’s further intensified by drums and a stripped back guitar sound lending weight to the haunting vocals, while the video is a minimalist take on the iconic rainbow imagery adopted by the LGBT community.
“During our Irish tour in April we met loads of people canvassing and raising awareness for the Marriage Referendum on May 22nd.” explains lead singer Julie Hawk. “Our date at Dolan’s in Limerick ran on the same night as a major LGBTQ party run by OUT in UL in the downstairs venue. After the gig, we met and spoke to a variety of passionate campaigners and their enthusiasm really stuck with us. We continued to see the same passion in Galway, Cork and Dublin. When we started playing ‘Glass’ we had the idea of a video that complemented the hypnotic nature of the track.”
“James Byrne (director) had suggested the idea of filming colours dispersing in water and we felt this was the perfect opportunity to do something that would raise awareness of the vote, and keep it front of mind, not just with people who follow us in Ireland, but with people in London and the UK as well. With the amount of effort we saw going into the cause we’re so happy to be making a contribution, and I can’t wait to fly home to vote on May 22nd”.
Glass is released via Veta Records and available to download for free via HAWK’s SoundCloud page.
HAWK release download track ‘Fire In A Classroom’!
"HAWK combine post-punk and folk in a spine-tingling brew that'll take potshots at your emotional wellbeing" - The Line of Best Fit
"...a searing post-rock epic..." - Gigwise
"I honestly can't stress enough how nice [Fire In A Classroom] is..." - The 405
HAWK have released a free download track, 'Fire In A Classroom', which is taken from their EP Clock Hands, released via Veta Records.
The track premiered on The 405 and you can download and stream the song for free via the band's SoundCloud page.
The video for EP title track Clock Hands premiered on The Line Of Best Fit and you can watch it now on the band's YouTube channel.
Clock Hands continues to explore the limits of light and shade. The title track combines soaring and ethereal vocals with a guitar and rhythm section that defy traditional melodic forms but retain an air of their folk heritage. Like a post-rock Daughter, HAWK’s talent for minimalist storytelling is evident on tracks such as ‘Fire In A Classroom’ and ‘Footsteps, but their ability to convey emotion through music and Julie’s amazing vocal range is just as strong. The intro to last year’s single and EP track Hush is wordless, yet is all the more powerful for it, and a spine tingling example of the band’s dark beauty.
Hush gained support from the likes of The Line Of Best Fit, Music Week (who tipped them as ones to watch in 2015), as well as Amazing Radio, BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, and XFM DJ and Blur drummer Dave Rowntree. The track premiered on Gigwise, and you can stream and download it for free via HAWK's SoundCloud page while the haunting video that accompanies premiered on The Line Of Best Fit and can be watched on the band's YouTube channel.
Clock Hands is released via Veta Records and available to buy on iTunes.
HAWK EP ‘Clock Hands’ out now!
"HAWK combine post-punk and folk in a spine-tingling brew that'll take potshots at your emotional wellbeing" - The Line of Best Fit
"Akin to a darker, more intense incarnation of Daughter, new EP 'Clock Hands' finds the group at their most inquisitive."
- Clash
HAWK's Clock Hands EP is out now on Veta Records. The EP is streaming exclusively on Clash Magazine’s website.
The band recently released two videos for tracks from the EP - Hush and Clock Hands. Both videos premiered first on The Line of Best Fit and showcase the band’s genre defying sound. On Hush, Julie’s vocals are almost Kate Bush-esque floating over post-rock melodies but with Clock Hands, the band explore their folkier roots.
Alongside Clash and The Line of Best Fit, the band can count BBC 6Music’s Tom Robinson, XFM’s Dave Rowntree, Artrocker, Gold Flake Paint and God is in the TV as fans of their dark and enchanting sound.
The EP is available to buy now via iTunes and to stream via Spotify.
