Festive Friday!
As a special edition of our Tunes for a Tuesday blogs we've put together a few of our favourite festive tracks for your audio delight.Claire: The Futureheads - Christmas Was Better In The 80s
The Futureheads pretty much hit the nail on the head when it comes to a modern day take Christmas track - it’s fun, it’s festive and there’s a little nostalgia in there too (see the title - doh!). Plus being a fellow 80s child I concur wholeheartedly with the sentiment. Perhaps being an adult at Christmas is just boring now but either way, this is right at the top of my list for best original alternative Christmas songs. Bring on the festive fun. YAAAS!
Paul: Spinal Tap - Christmas With The Devil
It wouldn’t be Christmas without a bit of Spinal Tap inspiring our holiday cheer. Ultimately, this is just pure Spinal Tap and that’s why I like it, and what’s not to like about their quirky take on all things festive? With lyrics like “the elves are dressed in leather, and the angels are in chains… and the stockings are in flames...” how could you not like this little rock and/or roll Christmas ditty. To be fair Spinal Tap could probably shit in a cracker and present it to one and all at Christmas dinner and it would still be of significant quality to enhance any holiday season. “There’s a demon in my belly and a gremlin in my brain, there’s someone up the chimney hole and Satan is his name…”. Merry fucking christmas!
Ellie: Best Coast and Wavves - Got Something For You
I’ve been a fan of Best Coast and their Californian indie-pop for a fair few years now, so I was delighted when I discovered that they’d done a Christmas song with fellow indie rockers Wavves. ‘Got Something For You’ brings a bit of sunshine to these bleak winter months but don’t worry, they’ve also thrown in some rather lovely sleigh bell sound affects to keep things festive too.
Adam: Lisa Hannigan - Silent Night
A beautiful if not a little dark take on the traditional classic. I'm not really a fan of the usual Christmas pop (unless it's really, REALLY good) and much prefer the old carols, especially those with a few minor chords thrown in, everything is so sweet/bright/unflinchingly full on at this time of year, it's nice to have something to balance it out while retaining that festive feel. Sung entirely a cappella the lyrics are twisted into a dark tale of the loneliness at this time of year. Not to ruin the mood or anything...
