Another successful year for our bands and labels!

Posted Tue, 24 Nov 2015

As we reach the end of the year, we thought we'd share some of the highlights here at ABoF HQ. We've been busy working hard with more bands and labels than ever in 2015, now offering radio plugging services alongside online and press and we now have our very own radio show on FUBAR Radio.

This year we've managed to help our bands reach some of the most important publications, websites and blogs on the scene with support from the likes of the Guardian, The Independent, The Times, Q, Kerrang!, Rock Sound, Vive Le Rock, DIY, Drowned in Sound, Noisey, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, The Quietus, The 405, Scotland on Sunday, The Sunday Herald, The List, The Skinny and many more.

As we inch closer towards 2016, we're now in the process of planning our release schedule from January onwards. We aim to build another sterling roster for the year ahead and we are now looking for bands, artists and labels from all over the world to come join us - as long as we love the music we're up for working with you.

Idlewild Returned!

Idlewild made a triumphant return to the scene, spending this last year on our wonderful roster, with the release of their album Everything Ever Written, which was a top 20 hit in the UK Album Charts. Together with ABoF we managed to spread the news of their return far and wide with heavy support from BBC 6Music, Dermot O'Leary on BBC Radio, a cover feature on The Skinny Magazine and glowing reviews from Drowned in Sound to The Independent and many more. We even managed to get How To Train Your Dragon / This Is The End actor Jay Baruchel (a lifelong fan of the band) over to feature in the video for the band's single Every Little Means Trust.

Our Labels...

Berlin based label Sinnbus continued to release an array of quality music with Canada's We Are The City releasing two albums this year to Danish pop kid Asbjørn making waves amongst the cool pop crowd from i-D to IDOL Magazine.

We Are The City's latest video for Kiss Me, Honey is available to watch now via YouTube.

Scotland - Staying True To Our Roots

We also continued to fly the flag for Scotland working with altruistic Glasgow based label Bloc+Music as well as an array of other releases from north of the border including Black International, Outblinker and We Came From Wolves.

The Van T's recently released their EP Laguna Babe via Bloc+Music, watch the video for the title track via YouTube.

A Badge of Friendship of FUBAR Radio!

In April we started a new music show on FUBAR Radio. Once a week we get to spin tracks from bands around the globe that aren't necessarily on our roster although we do highlight one ABoF artist once a week. So far, guests on the show have included Armando Iannucci (Veep, Alan Partridge), Andrew WK, Jay Baruchel (How To Train Your Dragon, This Is The End), Simon Neil (Biffy Clyro), The Twilight Sad, Pulled Apart By Horses and many more.

Listen to our soundtrack special with Armando Iannucci on Soundcloud.

If you'd like to get in touch, please send a Soundcloud or Bandcamp link (no attachments please) to info@abadgeoffriendship.com and let us know what releases you have planned for the new year. We always listen to everything people are kind enough to send music our way.

Idlewild release video for ‘Every Little Means Trust’ starring Jay Baruchel!

Idlewild have released the video for their forthcoming single Every Little Means Trust, starring Canadian actor and writer Jay Baruchel (How To Train Your Dragon, This Is The End).

The video premiered on The Guardian's website, who also captured the moment Idlewild and Jay met for the first time in an in depth interview, and you can watch it now via the band's YouTube channel.

Every Little Means Trust is the third single taken from Idlewild’s critically acclaimed album, Everything Ever Written, which has been championed by the likes of The Independent, The Times, Guardian, Drowned In Sound, Q, Kerrang!, The Skinny and many others.

The track has a laid back and disarming melody that showcases just how much Idlewild have matured as a band during their hiatus, with vocals and guitar flowing together perfectly. The single was woven together with the idea that hope sits side by side with disappointment, as visited in classic Idlewild singles such as American English and Love Steals Us From Loneliness.

After discovering Jay was a long time fan, the band invited him to Scotland to feature in the forthcoming video for the single.

“Idlewild have been the soundtrack of my life since I first heard them in Bristol when I was 19.” remarked Jay “To say that I’m excited would be an understatement. I am proud and honoured and kind of still floored that I get to be a part of their work in any way whatsoever.”

Jay currently stars in hit FXX series Man Seeking Woman, which has just been confirmed for a second season. He is also about to start shooting Goon 2, the sequel to Goon, written by Baruchel himself and Evan Goldberg, with Baruchel taking on directorial duties this time around.

Idlewild front man Roddy Woomble had this to say about Jay’s involvement: “We were delighted to find out that Jay was such a big fan of the group. It is always nice to know that your work is appreciated. The fact that he’s also been so generous with his time by agreeing to come to Scotland and appear in the video was wonderful. He is a very talented and interesting actor.”

Jay Baruchel to star in Idlewild video for single ‘Every Little Means Trust’!

Posted Mon, 16 Mar 2015

Canadian actor Jay Baruchel (How To Train Your Dragon, This Is The End, Robocop) will star in Idlewild’s forthcoming video for single Every Little Means Trust, out 27th April 2015 via Empty Words.

After discovering Jay was a long time fan, the band decided to invite him to Scotland to film the video, their first in over eight years.

"Idlewild have been the soundtrack of my life since I first heard them in Bristol when I was 19," Jay says. "I was lucky enough to be near the radio when ‘You Held The World In Your Arms’ came on and it was epic and anthemic and that was it. It was like hearing a favourite band that I’d somehow never heard before. At turns, violent and melancholy and crystalline and triumphant. I very quickly fell down the rabbit hole of melody, intention, and poetry that is Idlewild’s art. To say that I’m excited would be an understatement. I am proud and honoured and kind of still floored that I get to be a part of their work in any way whatsoever."

The band are excited to have Jay involved, with front man Roddy Woomble commenting: "We were delighted to find out that Jay was such a big fan of the group. It is always nice to know that your work is appreciated. The fact that he’s also been so generous with his time by agreeing to come to Scotland and appear in the video was wonderful. He is a very talented and interesting actor."

The video will be shot in the Highlands by director Oscar Sansom of Glasgow based production company Forest of Black. Oscar has previously directed videos for Fatherson and LaFontaines with Forest of Black’s impressive showreel including videos for Biffy Clyro, Sons And Daughters, Belle & Sebastian, Holy Mountain and Ladytron.

Jay currently stars in hit FXX series Man Seeking Woman, which has just been confirmed for a second season. He is also about to start shooting Goon 2, the sequel to Goon, written by Baruchel himself and Evan Goldberg, with Baruchel taking on directorial duties this time around.

Idlewild Announce Bespoke Craft Beer - Scottish Fiction IPA!

Posted Thu, 29 Jan 2015

Idlewild have joined forces with Edinburgh based Barney’s Beer to celebrate the band’s eighth album Everything Ever Written in association with The List.

The beer will be available in Scotland as part of a limited edition batch to coincide with the launch. The band and brewer are very excited to be working together to celebrate the launch of the new album and the band’s return to music after five years away.

To mark the launch, the band are having a party on Friday 6th Feb in Summerhall (Edinburgh) where the beer will be available, plus an exclusive playback of Everything Ever Written followed by a DJ set from the band. Tickets are free and available here.

The bottles will also feature a QR code that will provide access to a free download of a special acoustic performance of one of the band’s earliest and best loved tracks 'A Film For The Future’ from their album Hope Is Important.

The band tried Barney’s range from the very light Extra Pale ale to a new double Volcano IPA – the band, all beer drinkers, settled for a beer that would be sessionable and accessible to music fans and beer fans alike.

“When the band approached me to collaborate on a beer I invited them down to the brewery to have a taste of some beers and throw around some ideas.” stated Barney, the man behind the brewery.
“We’re not new to artistic collaborations having worked with John Byrne, Ryoko Tamura and Will Pickvance - so it was great to have the whole b’s input and come up with something that reflects the ideas behind Everything Ever Written”

Scottish Fiction IPA is named after a track from the band’s album The Remote Part, which featured the poem Scottish Fiction by the late Edwin Morgan. It is made with Scottish malt and American hops to mirror the album’s musical ingredients - Scottish Folk, Hebridean psychedelia, Americana and American alternative rock.

Idlewild’s Roddy Woomble commented, “Idlewild are a band of committed and enthusiastic craft beer and ale drinkers and Barneys beer has been a favourite for quite a while.”

The very limited edition brew of 1250 bottles will be available at independent beer and wine shops and also will also be available on cask for a limited time only.

The band will be touring the UK in February and March. Check their Facebook page for full details.

Idlewild single Come On Ghost will be available to buy on iTunes and all good online retailers from 9th February 2015 with album Everything Ever Written to follow on 16th February 2015 in the UK on iTunes, CD and vinyl. Idlewild announce single ‘Come On Ghost’!

Posted Mon, 05 Jan 2015

Idlewild's forthcoming single Come On Ghost premiered on the first Shaun Keaveny Breakfast Show of 2015 on BBC 6Music. It is the second single taken from Idlewild’s latest album Everything Ever Written and will be released 9th February with the album following shortly after on 16th February 2015.

You can listen to the track 2 hours and 46 minutes into the show via iPlayer Radio.

The band’s first single after five years apart was Collect Yourself, which premiered on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6Music show in November 2014. The love and loyalty amongst Idlewild’s fans was apparent as always with Collect Yourself quickly making the 6Music A-list followed by the Evening Playlist on XFM.

The band’s eighth studio album represents a new chapter, both personally and creatively. Produced by the band’s guitarist Rod Jones and mixed by John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.) whom they collaborated with on their 2002 release The Remote Part and augmented by new members Luciano Rossi (piano, organ & vocals) and Andrew Mitchell (bass, guitar & vocals), Everything Ever Written is Idlewild’s most eclectic output to date. The album features twelve tracks of alternative rock woven together from strands of Scottish folk, Americana & Hebridean psychedelia.

"The album was predominantly written on the Isle of Mull", vocalist Roddy Woomble explains. "The record soundtracks a period of transition. Working without time constraints gave the whole thing a creative freedom. Idlewild is a new band to me now; I’m excited for the future."

In October 2014 the group completed a sold out acoustic tour of unique, intimate venues throughout the Highlands & Islands of Scotland, re-introducing themselves to live audiences after a half-decade break, performing re-worked versions of old songs as well as songs from the new album. The still, idyllic settings chosen for the performances hint towards the sense of space afforded in writing and recording the new album, which will be supported by a run of live shows in spring 2015.

All European tour dates are listed below.

26th February - Strom – Munich
27th February - Luxor – Cologne
1st March - Lido – Berlin
2nd March - Knust – Hamburg
