Introducing… Poor Things

For fans of... Pavement, Sebadoh, Teenage Fanclub, Dinosaur Jr.

Scottish three-piece Poor Things are pleased to announce the release of free download track 'Morgan', taken from their forthcoming EP, Hurricane Poor Things, out on 10th June via Vinyl Richie Records.

Consisting of Craig Angus (Guitar, Vocals), Richard Stratton (Bass, Guitar, Vocals) and Gavin Redford (Drums) the three-piece, originally from Perth, have been playing together for over ten years. Originally playing "Nirvana covers on Friday nights" whilst at school, Hurricane Poor Things is the bands third full release and was produced by Ross McGowan at Chime Studios.

You can download the EP track 'Morgan' for free from the embed below or via the ABoF Soundcloud page.

The band cite Teenage Fanclub, Pavement and Grandaddy as influences, but their guitar driven alt-indie rock comes flavoured with euphoric moments similar to The Smashing Pumpkins, allied with melodies akin to the likes of Weezer. Bolstered by turbulent rolling drum beats and engulfed by high intensity guitar lines, Hurricane Poor Things comes as a battering of the senses - music in which the listener can lose all inhibition.

Opening track, 'Beachcomber';, sets the scene well; with guitars and percussion going head to head in a duel. Craig Angus plays ringmaster to these behemoths, reigning them in with his honest and sincere lyrics. 'Summer Clutch' also comes across in a similar vein; with cloudy dappled guitar riffs and addictive melodies, Poor Things create perfect pop-rock moments in which to get dreamily caught up in.

After a recent support slot with the mighty Scottish rockers Fat Goth, Poor Things are set to support indie stalwarts Little Comets at King Tuts on 24th April, which will kick off a impressive summer for the three-piece.

With a festival appearance at Brew At The Bog and a full tour of Scotland planned in June, Hurricane Poor Things heralds a change in pace from Poor Things, making 2013 an exciting year for the band.

Poor Things release Hurricane Poor Things on 10th June via Vinyl Richie Records.

Woodenbox single ‘Courage’ out now!

For fans of... Grizzly Bear, Field Music, Supergrass

"...contagious." - Uncut Magazine

Alt-folk sextet - Woodenbox release the single Courage from their second album End Game today. End Game is out on 27th May 2013 via Olive Grove but you can download the single now via iTunes, Amazon or the Woodenbox Bandcamp page. Working alongside acclaimed producer Paul Savage (Chem19 Studios), Woodenbox are building upon the success of their debut Home and the Wildhunt with their wild, vivid and moving unique brand of folk.

You can stream Courage now from the ABoF Soundcloud page.

Woodenbox also have a string of live dates announced including an album launch on 23rd May.

5 May - Westgarth Social Club, Middlesborough
18 May - Electric Circus, Edinburgh
23 May - Grand Ole Opry, Glasgow (Album Launch)
9 June - Eden Festival, Dumfries & Galloway
26 July - Wickerman Festival

The band previously released the free track 'Roll For Me', which is available to download now via their Soundcloud page.

The video for 'Roll For Me' is available to watch now on YouTube.

The video for album track "Asphyxiation" is also available on YouTube.

End Game demonstrates a perfect juxtaposition that runs rife within Woodenbox, making it both bold and beguiling. "The album was created as a unit falling apart but looking to stay together," says lead vocalist Ali. "We believe so much in the music we are making and it is the first album we have written collaboratively." Forthcoming single Courage is graceful and welcomes influences from heroes such as Scott Walker and Dennis Wilson, whilst "Roll For Me" displays the band's melodic quirks and intricacies sharing modern, akin to the The Felice Brothers.

Nick Dudman (vocals, drums) and Ali Downer (vocals, guitar, piano) met in 2004, the pair played relentlessly around Glasgow under various guises before settling under the guise of Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers. Ali then met Jordan Croan (vocals, guitar) and Fraser McKirdy (bass) at STOW College, which saw the group bonding through their love of music. Rather than go to classes the band recorded their debut album Home and the Wild Hunt, which is probably a good thing since Uncut and The Skinny praised the album's refreshing alt folk sound. Citing Scott Walker's Scott Sings Jacq as a major influence on the band, Ali explained "we want to create music that has a story behind it and is not only timeless, but is bold in its creativity and instrumentation." Philip Cardwell, Chuck Dearness and Sam Evans joined the group later adding the horn section giving their sound real depth.

Having played to inspiring crowds at Belladrum, Rockness, Wickerman and T in the Park, Woodenbox have established themselves as incredible live performers. The band have toured the US extensively, including a highly successful appearance at SxSW in 2012.

Now Woodenbox are ready to win over new hearts with End Game and bring their refreshing sound back again to the scene. Physical promo copies of Courage and End Game are available for press and radio for review, please email claire@abadgeoffriendship.com for more information.

Algernon Doll Unveil Video for ‘Cassini’

"Reminiscent of the much missed Elliott Smith."

- Artrocker Magazine

For fans of... Elliott Smith, Red House Painters, Mark Lanegan

Algernon Doll release their latest video for Cassini taken from forthcoming album Citalo-pop due for release on 10th June 2013 via Common Records.

Cassini exhibits a change in direction by Algernon Doll, who produce a grungier sound and video to match.

'Cassini' is available to watch via Algernon Doll's YouTube channel.

Cassini is the first release from upcoming album Citalo-pop. While Algernon Doll's debut album, Camomile, mirrored Ewan’s difficulty in dealing with the toils of extreme anxiety disorder and bipolar, Citalo-pop immediately offers up something fresh in comparison with the inclusion of fuzzy grunge-esque guitars, distorted, layered vocals and Algernon Doll’s trademark off-kilter alt-folk sound.

You can download Cassini from the ABoF Soundcloud page.

Evoking the spirit of the likes of Red House Painters on Old Ramon, Mark Lanegan and Elliott Smith, Algernon Doll continues to display a maturity beyond his years by executing such a rich texture to his songwriting - something many of his contemporaries would aspire to achieve.

Opening album tracks ‘Anti-them’ and ‘Cassini’, mark an immediate change in direction - a freer feeling from the more introspective debut produced last year. Up tempo, distorted guitars soar throughout, with driven incessant drumming and time changes galore, all brought together by Grant’s emotionally charged vocals. Even the dreamier ‘Home- schooled’, which has a far more ominous feeling, illustrates the direction Algernon Doll has taken as the track builds slowly into a visceral, heavy outro spearheaded by Grant’s expressive guitar playing and intense vocals.

Citalo-pop is a vehicle for Grant to expel his dark outlook on life while allowing him to tap into his punk and hardcore background, thus creating an unsettled sound, one that keeps the listener on their toes throughout the 13 tracks found on the album.

The last year has been an exciting time for Algernon Doll. Having released his debut album, as well as supporting the likes of Franz Nicolay (Against Me), Chris T-T, Esperi and Willis Earl Beal, he now follows that up with another expertly crafted record. By assembling a full band for live shows to replicate the bigger sound produced on the album, Algernon Doll has also added another dimension to his project setting up a thrilling year ahead.

Citalo-pop is due for release on 10th June 2013 via Common Records.

Three Blind Wolves announce debut album and tour dates!

For fans of... My Morning Jacket, Wilco, Neil Young

"Stadium sized melodies and four-part harmonies without diving headlong into a pool full of cliches..."
- MOJO Magazine

After two successful singles and a tour with Frightened Rabbit, Glasgow four-piece Three Blind Wolves present their fantastic debut album Sing Hallelujah For The Old Machine out on 27th May 2013 via Instinctive Racoon.

The band will also release an EP for Record Store Day entitled Three Blind Wolves Love Music, a taster from the EP - 'The Maybe Forest' - is available to stream now on the band's Soundcloud page.

Their recently released singles, In Here Somewhere and Parade, could easily be compared to artists like My Morning Jacket and Neil Young but there are moments where the band move beyond their trademark Americana influences. “Honey Fire” crescendos into an ambient wall of sound, suddenly transforming into a grungier chorus. “Slow Summer Deer” is big, bold and brilliantly indie yet “When The Garden Gets Near” is more intimate - just Ross Clark on his acoustic guitar. It feels as though the band are pushing and pulling you through a journey of emotion.

The band will be on tour throughout May in the UK and supporting Wintersleep in Europe to promote the album.

4th May - Brew at the Bog, Inverness
5th May - Big Beach Ball, Aberdeen
6th May - Knust, Hamburg, Germany (supporting Wintersleep)
7th May - PrivatClub, Berlin, Germany (supporting Wintersleep)
9th May - Strom, Munich, Germany (supporting Wintersleep)
10th May - Gare De Lion, Switzerland (supporting Wintersleep)
11th May - Mad Bonn, Dudingen, Switzerland (supporting Wintersleep)
12th May - Albani, Winterthur, Switzerland (supporting Wintersleep)
15th May - The Glad Cafe, Glasgow
16th May - The Glad Cafe, Glasgow
17th May - 20 ROCKS, Dundee
18th May - PJ Molloys, Dunfermline
19th May - Comlongon Rocks, Dumfries
21st May - Oporto, Leeds
22nd May - Night & Day, Manchester
23rd May - Dempseys, Cardiff
24th May - Sebright Arms, London
25th May - Shipping Forecast, Liverpool

The single In Here Somewhere and b-side 'Kid's Allright' are available to stream now on Three Blind Wolves' Soundcloud.

Parade, gained support from John Kennedy (XFM) and Vic Galloway (BBC Radio 1 Scotland) with the band also being asked to perform a session for Dermot O'Leary (BBC Radio 2). Their second single, In Here Somewhere, saw the boys take to the road with fellow Scots Frightened Rabbit, supporting the northern leg of their tour.

Singer Ross Clark started out as a solo artist playing gigs in Glasgow, after meeting David Cleary (lead guitar, backing vocals, mandolin), Kevin Mackay (bass, backing vocals) and Fearghas Lyon (drums, backing vocals) from their own musical adventures, the four bonded instantly and formed a band. Over the past three years they have toured across the USA, Canada, The Netherlands and the UK extensively, including showcasing at SXSW, CMW and Eurosonic in 2012 and major festivals such as T in the Park, Hop Farm and The Great Escape.

Their mini album Sound of the Storm in 2011 had The List hailing them as a “countrified Modest Mouse”. The Skinny compared them to Bright Eyes and Bon Iver whilst Rolling Stone noted comparisons to the Decemberists. More recently The Vinyl District hailed the boys as “the most important new band to emerge from Scotland this year”.

Sing Hallelujah For The Old Machine is released on 27th May 2013 via Instinctive Racoon.
